My opinion is that not turning in assignments and homework is a behavior, and we've always been told that behavior cannot be connected to grades, but rather to discipline reports or something like that. Therefore, "missing assignments" should be dropped from the grade. That's a step toward the philosophy presented in this video, but apparently doesn't go far enough. My question is, can formative assessments be graded and entered into a student's grade total?

EXACTLY!!!!!!!! I get so fucking mad when i know EVERYTHING about what my teacher teaches, but because I have better things to do in life then slave over a pointless, rehashed demonstration of what I ALREADY KNOW, I get a b-. I should have gotten an a+. I am THE SMARTEST kid in the majority of my classes, and im less than great in NONE of them. but i get bs.

You are SO right !!! I have seen teachers so frustrated when a child comes to school without his/her homework. Children who have real special needs struggle in classrooms like this, I know this from experience. As an Educator when my granddaughter comes home and she tells me she does not understand her homework, it does not get done. I send her back to school. My daughter who is a modern day educator (5th grade) gets very upset with me :)
