With all respect for Alfred Deller( !!) but this does not cut it. Too forced ,barely able to pronounce the words (awful pronounciation to bigin with) correctly because short of breath. Listen to Aafje Heynis (here on You tube) and one will be convinced in a flash who can SING this from the heart and with emotion and with absolute breath control.
Alfred Deller is just sublime in this magnificent aria. He has the voice of an angel - utterly captivating and beautiful. Over 50 years later the recording remains as intensely moving as music and the human voice can be.
Is this the 1954 recording of this aria? Sung very modestly, very much in contrast with the rather more self-confident singers of today. But in complete harmony with the unique beauty of his voice...
@AlsatianCousin hey... saw your comment about your liking the orch. i guess to each his own. i prefer my orchestras to play in tune even when leaning into anyone's singing as you put it. my point is.... he is singing it so magnificently.... all the out of tune playing harms a masterful performance even if he rises above it. be well.
Muy resio la musica de conratenores muy suave y asi ya que personas como nosotros los contratenores avemos 1 de cada 1000, asi que sigan suviendo musica de nosotros =*)
Please listen to Janet Baker with the Acamdemy of St Martin in the Field recording. That is how it should be performed. This is schmolz in the extreme (and the orchestra is not that great).
@marcellny Finally someone who could say it in words ! Musically a miracle and a coloration of voice as no one else has done it and of course with a deep comprehension of the words. Thank you for posting this comment !

You don't aften get a Male alto, (or countertenor) but it is nice to hear one once in a while.
