Connie Young Yu is a historian, archeologist, activist and author on the Chinese experience in America. In this episode, Suzanne Barnett, host of Community Balance, conducts a wide ranging interview of Connie. Topics touched on include Pre-1882 Chinese immigration, archeological excavations at Woolen Mills, Heinlenville and Market street Chinatowns in San Jose, the 1882 Chinese Exclusion Act including Connie's family's own legal battle against it, and Connie's own activism in preserving the Angel Island Immigration station. Of particular note, in part 4 of this episode Connie answers the question of why is this important to us today.
