Using an Emerson DeltaV DCS (Distributed Control System) to implement feedforward load compensation on an air turbine speed control process.

An interesting aspect of the DeltaV's PID function block (patterned after the FOUNDATION Fieldbus PID function block) is that the feedforward control signal path gets overridden when the block is in manual mode. This allows total control of the valve by the operator, but it also makes it challenging to "tune" the feedforward gain value, not being able to easily place the feedback PID function (alone) in manual.

Our solution for tuning the feedforward gain value, and also for demonstrating pure feedforward action in this video, was to set the PID function's gain value all the way to zero, so it is effetively turned off.
