@hopelesslyderanged -- What true story?

You know what, guys? I think that this is loosely based on "Hansel and Gretel". A young brother and sister lie in poverty, come from a troubled home and end up being taken in by an elderly woman. I've even made the connection with their names:
Hansel (or HANS) is German for John.
Gretel is a German variation of Margaret, which means "pearl".
Get it?

@ButterflyQueene07 Yes - one of the loveliest scenes in all of movieland

there is a surreal quality to this movie, an eerie mingling of authenticity and atmospheric studio set scenes that makes it cling to your subconciuosness long after you've seen the film. Of course, Mitchum is the sparking hot lightning rod in this dark storm that slowly envelops you. His love vs. hate knuckle tat story is iconic.

This is a great movie. I love the scene where the children are escaping on the river boat. It was an enchanting, breath-taking scene. This movie reminded me of "Hansel and Gretel".
