This is a performance by Preston Reed of his piece "Tribes", taken from the dvd "The Guitar of Preston Reed: Expanding the Realm of Acoustic Playing".

Apologies for the red text, I don't have any registered software for uploading from dvd. If you like this tune I suggest you check the dvd, it teaches you to play this piece and two others in great detail.

Also the video is a tiny bit out of sync with the audio but I can't seem to sort that, I've uploaded it three times now and the problem doesn't go away and the video I put up is fine pre-upload.

  • What is the name of this playing style?

  • Hi Ernst,

It is known by many names but some might call this "over the top of the neck playing" with two hand tapping, percussion and harmonics. It can also be known as experimental acoustic guitar playing.

If you want to hear other players who use similar techniques then I suggest you check out Michael Hedges, Andy McKee, Thomas Leeb and Antoine Dufour, but there are plenty of others who play like this. But for more over the top of the neck playing just look up Preston Reed.

  • @katanamanatee actually justin king is very adept at this style too, i don't think he is as qutie a good songwritter, but he can do some amazing things with tapping.

  • @shadybrain3424 True, Justin King is definitely adept at this style though I find his tapping stuff a little to busy sounding at times but that is just my personal preference, he is great at what he does!

  • I like the style and sound along but I prefer it a bit harder and faster but the only one i have found close to this is Miyavi, does anyone have any other artist suggestions?

  • @UNCPATRICK If you watch Drifting, you can see Reed's influence on McKee

  • @ErnstL1992 american finger style guitar

  • @katanamanatee that pretty much how i feel about him, but he is definately a talented tapper.
