  • Why do people carry backup knives? The idea is totally alien to me.

If it's in case your knife breaks, dude, I've never heard of any knife from any reputable company completely breaking in a way which renders the edge useless...EVER.

The whole backup knife stuff is a load of bull IMHO. Knives don't just break and if they do you can get by with half a cutting edge or no handle for one day...especially at school, you don't exactly work at the docks or in a retail storeroom.

  • @ihaterobbie123 i'm an art student and a blade comes in handy. sometimes i might forget and that's when the back-ups comes in handy. the whole back-up knife thing isn't for everybody and i understand that. normally i just carry a swiss army knife for multi-purpose use. when i'm not in school, i carry a SAK and sometimes a bigger blade (rarely anymore).

yes, knives don't break that easily, but sometimes carrying a back-up comes in handy for carious tasks that don't require a huge blade.

  • @kenthenoob OK, that's a bit more understandable. I carry a knife around to do wood carvings whenever I see something I like. I can't carry a fixed wood carving knife (lol, UK) so I carry around a G10 UKPK. Despite the really hard steel the tip's never broken once so I found the idea of carrying another knife kind of silly.

I would have thought a Stanley would be better for art class though.

  • @ihaterobbie123 i've considered a Stanley, but they're rather heavy. i used to carry a folding utility knife in my backpack, but the ergonomics just weren't as good.

  • It's just spyderco urban, not the "urban ukpk"

  • @frozenicelolly k cool. don't think it's that big of a deal, but thanks.
