This is my favourite recording of Il Trovatore. Von Karajan really gave it the oomph it deserves.

DiStefano had one of the most beautiful voices. But, unlike long lasting tenors like Kraus, Pavarotti himself, Martinelli, and others, he couldn't master diafragm singing; so, he spoiled his voice prematurely. Fonseca, voice teacher of mine, told me once that DiStefano visited him for voice training, but that it was too late for him, because his voice was much deteriorated at that time. Fonseca claimed to have been a voice student under Antonio Paoli, a tenor who did master diafragm control.

Top three tenors of the 20th century: Enrico Caruso, Giuseppe di Stefano, Luciano Pavarotti, hands down.

Mario del Monaco: "Di Stefano is the best voice of the 20th century".
Pavarotti: "Di Stefano was the best tenore".

I really love Pavarotti with passion, but every time I hear Pippo (his "soto-voce kills me), I think that Luciano was maybe right!
