A report released this week by the American magazine Vanity Fair disclosed a plan by the US administration to overthrow the democratically-elected Hamas by arming rival Fatah forces through millions of dollars worth of weapons. This as Israel waged its deadliest round of attacks on Gaza since 2000.

Al Jazeera's Hashim Ahlbarra meets with Hamas's Khaled Meshaal, head of the group's political bureau, and asks him about the report.

In this episode of Talk to Jazeera, Meshaal, talks about the leaked US plan of arming Fatah and instigating a civil war in Gaza.

He also talks about rocket fire from the coastal strip and answers questions about a possible truce with Israel.

Meshaal says the surfacing of this report vindicates Hamas's coup of Gaza, claiming that it was a pre-emptive measure forced upon them to preserve their existence and the voice of those who voted for them.

Al Jazeera also questions the leader on Hamas' logic behind rocket attacks from Gaza in light of the recent onslaught by Israel and the humanitarian loss as a result.

The Hamas leader is questioned about his links with Iran and where the group gets its backing from. Meshaal denies any funding or armament from Iran and insists that Hamas is an independent group, reliant on no one.

On talks with Israel, Meshaal says that following the "holocaust" perpetrated by the Israelis, talks are out of the question. He also says that Mahmoud Abbas, Palestinian president, should reassess his position on talks as well.

  • hamas has fired rockets only as revenge attacks.. They haven't inniated any attacks.. It's important to realize that. Most of the suicide against Israel are a consequence of an occupation.

  • The condition of Palestinians is because of its leadership and the Arab World. In case one does not take ration decisions. Even now there is no realistic approach. Very soon Arabs will be doing something more stupid and even loose whatever they are having. Be REALISTIC

  • "We are a people that do not surrender, a people that can never be broken!"

    MAAAAAAASHAALLAHH! (Alf Marra!)

  • sefardi, you can not take their house, kill thier families, expel them from the land, then 60 years later after so much infrastructure damage especially in education and economy, and say lets work together. no there must be Justice done.

Since your Sefardi, you should know how nice it was for the jews in muslim Spain, thats Justice, you should also know the inquisition (against muslims and jews) that followed, thats not justice and you can not exterminate a people or kick them out with fear.

  • respect for this men and for hamas! , fuck the terrorist pissraelians!

  • Khaled Meshaal, Legend!

  • "Not dieing at all is the better option" - So how are the Palestinians supposed to achieve this? Cease fires don't work, peace offers don't work, armed struggle doesn't work, peaceful resistance doesn't work, no resistance at all doesn't work. Whatever policy the Palis follow, the Israeli reaction is either occupation, expropriations, colonization, starvation and/or war.

  • When Hamas stops firing rockets, like it did during the 19 June-4Nov ceasefire it's all sweet indeed: the population just continues to die of hunger because of the US-Israeli-Egyptian embargo.

Look, the problem does not come from the Arab side, the Arabs have aligned to the international consensus since than 30 years now. It's the government of Israel, sadly, choses expansion over security for the people of Israel.

I don't get why people keep agressively blaming the victims of this conflict.

  • "Israel has said hunderds of times already "stop shooting rockets" if that was done it would be ALL sweet over there." - Wait a minute. Do you know why they started shooting these fireworks? Cos when Hamas got democratically elected and proposed a cease fire to Israel, Israel decided instead to punish the whole civilian population by starving them to death for the crime of having conducted elections. That's when Hamas started shooting rockets to protest.
