The movie shows the reef during night dives using fluorescence with special HiTec LEDs. Living corals in contrast to dead ones show different intensive colors. The species specific colors are correlated to GFP (green fluorescent protein). For the detection of GFP in a jellyfish three scientists earned the nobel prize for chemistry in 2008. The fluorecent technique can be used for large scale analysis of the status of coral reefs worldwide which are under natural and anthopogenic threat.

  • Incredible and so beautiful.

I ham headed to Grand Cayman, Truk, and Palau...may I ask what your photography equipment was? I have a 5D Mark II and would love to capture this on both video and photos. Will this work with strobe photography? Can you recommend a set up to go with my Sea and Sea 100a?

And thank you so very much for sharing,

    The Meltdownman
