The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights is calling for restraint in the violence in Xinjiang. He is hopeful an investigation will be launched, looking into the violent events which surrounded Sundays riots.

A spokesman for the U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights says Chinese authorities and ethnic groups in Xinjiang should refrain from further violence after Sunday's riots.

[Rupert Colville, UN Spokesman]:
"The High Commissioner (urges) Uighur and Han civic leaders, and the Chinese authorities at all levels, to exercise great restraint so as not to spark further violence and loss of life."

He says the High Commissioner is concerned for the region.

[Rupert Colville, UN Spokesman]:
The High Commissioner is alarmed by the large number of casualties during Sunday's rioting in Urumqi, as well as by continuing reports of high tension and unrest in the region."

The High Commissioner say that the demonstrators had the right to protest peacefully and those detained should be treated in line with international law.

[Rupert Colville, UN Spokesman]:
"The High Commissioner called for a transparent independent investigation into the causes of the rioting and the reasons why it escalated to the point of causing injuries or loss of life to over a thousand people, as well as identifying the victims and establishing precisely what happened to them. We believe such a process is essential to create trust.

Pillay's statement came today as riot police fired tear gas to disperse rock-throwing clashing Han and Uighur protesters.

  • @johnlayers on the bright side, we don't have a 9/11 here, cuz they don't take that bullshit. Maybe they should think about that b4 they riot or i mean "protest". I am Han Chinese and I support this. An strong stance so they know rioting isn't welcomed.

  • truth is chinese government doesnt care abt human rights when it comes to remaining in power. They would do anything to make chinese and uighurs shut up, even killing like hell when necessary. And han chinese r on the Government side when killing uighurs. So sad.

  • No Xinjiang, East - Turkistan !!!!!! Fuck chinis languige , and Fuck China!!!!!! Fuck Chinis Piggs, Sars , Virusis.....

  • "... the forum is not about it..."

Its about "human rights" . So why we cant talk about Zimbabwe, Australia and US.

If Tibet and olympic games are totally different issues and yet many of you like to mix these issues - so why cant i bring the zimbabwe issue in this forum.

  • "...xinjiagn is going to be a kashmere..."

for once you speak with sincerety without hypocrisy. i appreciate this.

You want China to become another india. No way. We are not interested to become the largest democracy. Our politicians are not interested in "peace" nobel awards like Mandela. You know how many crimes and rapes South africa boast every day

  • english is not my language I only started to learn my first english words when i was 16 and also french a few years later. But I am sure i can write better english and french than these semi illiterates idiots who pretend to know more of Chinese history than than the Chinese but cannot point Tibet or Xinjiang on Chinese map.

  • 1. This video is about China's encroachments on human rights in an area which the occupied following the assassination of Uighur leaders by Mao Zedong.(In an aeroplane) Your comprehension of what I wrote is low, your English inadequate:2. I never said Zimbabwe is not your business, I just implied this forum is not about it. Finally, Xinjiang is going to be a true Kashmere, (without the fine cloth), and China would do good in withdrawing while it still can.

  • Muslims around the world dont care about Uyghyrs. They care about Palestine, Iraq, Afghanisthan and threats on iran. In 3 short days and relatively few victims, peace and order are back inXinjiang. So are you unhappy. Xinjiang is not Kashmere and will never be.

  • Ho Ho ! You now tell me that Zimbabwe is not my problem. Tell me why Hans should get out of Xinjiang while europeans can continue squatting Zimbabwe, Australia, North America.

  • East of China is historically a Han dominated area. Uighur lands are not. Zimbabwe is unrelated to the autocracy which has censored this forum, and so many other ones.
