Bela Bartok: Romanian Folk Dances, adapted for pipa (Chinese lute) and classical guitar duet by Liu Fang and Michael O'Toole.

Liu Fang and Michael O'Toole performed this beautiful piece in concerts during the tour in Ireland September - October 2008. The current video is a live recording of the concert at the Waterford Cathendral on September 29. Hungarian composer Bela Bartok is regarded as a true giant of twentieth century music. His work, while distinctly modern in a classical sense, pulsates with the rhythms and nuances of Eastern European folk music. Throughout his life, the composer devoted much time and energy to collecting, notating and cataloguing folk tunes of his people and the stirring melodies of this piece emanate from such endeavors. Bartok's classical training can be felt in some of the complex rhythmic and harmonic accompaniments but he always preserves the integrity of these beautiful melodies.

Le compositeur hongrois Bela Bartok est considéré comme un véritable géant du XXe siècle. Son travail, bien que moderne au sens classique du terme, bat aux rythmes nuancés de la musique folklorique de l'Europe de l'Est. Tout au long de sa vie, le compositeur a consacré beaucoup de temps et d'énergie à la collecte, au catalogage et à l'annotation des musiques folkloriques de son peuple; les mélodies de ce morceau émanent de tels efforts. La formation classique de Bartok peut se faire sentir dans certains accompagnements complexes au niveau de la rythmique et de l'harmonie, mais il conserve toujours l'intégrité originale de ces belles mélodies.

Bartok asserts that all of his music is tonal music. His works are some of the richest and most beautiful of the last century. The dissonances can become quite delicious once you get familiar with them. His Bagatelles are very accessible as are the Microcosmos for piano solo. I hope you will check them out. There is much more loveliness from where that came from!

I'm not familiar with Bartok. I thought most of his works were dischordant sounding and/or atonal. I don't really care for that stuff, but these pieces are lovely. *****
