Michael Schwam-Baird is a 2002 graduate of Cornell University, where he earned a BA in Literature, Theory, and Writing. Following graduation, he worked with the Service Employees International Union, organizing workers in Maryland, Los Angeles, and New Jersey. Thereafter, he moved to Ocotal, Nicaragua, where he ran a language exchange program; taught English in an elementary school; and researched fair trade farming cooperatives. He also spent time in Washington, D.C., where he worked with a corporate research firm. In 2004, Mr. Schwam-Baird received a Marshall Scholarship to pursue a masters degree in economic and social history at Oxford University. Currently, he is assistant director for research at the Cowen Institute for Public Education Initiatives at Tulane University. In this role, he is charged with informing the process of public education improvement in New Orleans with high quality information and applied research.
