Bryn Frbes's first film as director is a delightful Kith Wterhose/Willis Hll adaptation of Mry Hyley Bll's novel. This classic parable of British cinema is a charming quasi-religious snapshot of childhood innocence.

Set in a grim Lancashire farm community, three impressionable kids (Hyley Mills, Dine Hlgate, and Alan Brnes) find an injured fugitive from justice named Arthur Blakey (Aln Btes) sleeping in their barn. Upon awakening the bearded criminal, he takes one look at the children and exclaims: "Jesus Christ!" In their innocence, they assume he is Jesus due to their been sturdy religious upbringing and try to help him. In truth, he is an escaped killer on the run. News that Christ is living in the barn travels quickly to the other children in the village, they bring Blakey food and wine to earn his approval. The kids try to keep the secret from their parents, but when the authorities come around looking for him, the children, remembering Christ's persecution, do their best to protect their undeserving new friend. When Blakey is betrayed by accident, the police move in to arrest him, by this time his attitude has softened and he surrenders peaceably rather than endanger the lives of any of the children.

  • Who stole the whole film......the late comers. My favourite film of all time.

  • They don't make 'em like this anymore...

  • Grew up in this era and have seen this film dozens of times over the years and although i'm a grown man now i still get a tear in my eye. Childhood innocence reflected brilliantly. The depiction of the times is also superb, that was really how we dressed !!! An English film to be very proud of. All my kids have seen it too and it affects them all in the same way. Just a wonderful film you never get tiredd of seeing.

  • The Music by Malcolm Arnold is pure Genius, one of the best Soundtracks that fits a film ever.

  • 4:10 when he's standing with his arms apart (symbol of Jesus Christ) is so touching. Such a heart warming ending. I LOVE this film to bits, and I love Jesus Christ.

  • The last time i saw this was probably 15-19 yrs ago, i remembered the title hard in hoping i never forget it so i can watch it again and now ive watch it all, i think its the best emotional movie ever.

    Thank you for uploading it.

  • Love the wellie boots, as a child I wore these as did most kids then no fashion statements then all kids dressed more or less the same, an innocent time but certainly a happy one. Classic British film.

  • Hayley Mills and the kids were his kinda Salvation/redemption, they made him give himself up. Theres that strong sense of faith running through this film. The children hav faith that the man is Jesus, and the man in-tern has faith at the end becus the children c him as sumthing gud. So that encourages him 2 do the right thing, I guess his faith from then on is that he more or less places himself in God's hands.

  • Just marvelous! I remember my mum loving this great film when I was a nipper..40 years ago!!!Many thanks.

  • The ending is SOOO touching :(

When I saw this as a child I only understood that the kids had someone they liked and were in awe of, taken away. Suppose it's still true...
