Software Piracy

http://live.pirillo.com - Matt is a YouTube community member who watches us regularly. He recently sent me a very interesting email, asking about my thoughts on piracy, and how to put a stop to it. Piracy of music, software and movies is rampant these days, and there is just no one sure-fire way to put an end to it.

I love pirating software and guess what? I'm not going to stop, nor do I care that it's illegal.

Okay, Piracy =/= Theft. A theft is having your car stolen; the car is no longer in your possession against your will. Piracy would be your car being taken, but the original is left unchanged in your driveway. Also? To respond to your question, if I were a dev, and people were pirating my software, I'd be proud and find a way to capitalize on it. Look at Stardock with Sins of Solar Empire.

I kinda of have to ask too, what is the difference between downloading a movie and taping it with your VCR/DVD/DVR? I didn't even know this was illegal, it turns out actually it is, but no one cares, if you were watching a movie you taped with a cop, he won't slap the cuffs on you, and cops even do it themselves without consequence.

Though, Chris is kinda wrong about the coffee example. You can't copyright food! Well, not the type of food anyway. No one could legally start selling their own big macs, but McDonalds can't stop people from selling and making Hamburgers!

@guitarmaster199 Actually, eventually be will be able to do that too. Have you seen those three dimensional printers? What will they do when you can print your own hardware? Ban the materials?

@markxq Well, for one thing my lease sign that I must move out in 12 days if I couldn't pay my rent, but that is null and void according to the law that says otherwise, that tenants have legal rights.
