the soul is there, no question about it.. so many people confuse sloppy attacks and lack of technique as "soul" but it ain't so.. that Carl has done his woodshedding homework and developed marvelous technique and chops in both lead and jazz does not mean he plays with no "soul" and the fact that he can do it all does not disqualify him as a "jazzer" or what have you.. he has always moved me whenever i have seen him.. saw him tear up "anthropology" with supersax years ago, totally killed me..

carl is one amazing musician! used to listen to his stuff back in the late 90s till my dad stole my cd. ha ha.
I totally forgot about him till now and glad i found this video. thank you for uploading this!
i don't know about other people but i got chills watching this video. he's the man! I have no idea why he's not relatively unknown.

It is the people of pure emotion, the ones that seek only "soul," that make it a hospitable world for such a genius. You could liken him to a math genius if you want. To me, this man has an amazing talent and is one of the most underrated musicians I've seen yet.

I do not believe you all really understand what level Carl is really on. Say what you will about "soul" and other qualities that are personal to each individual listener, but I hear this guy play, you all seem to just notice sounds coming out of a trumpet. Do you have any idea how complex these harmonic passages are that he just so happens to be playing at lightning speed? I suspect not. Carl's demeanor when playing is almost that of effortlessness. He is a genius in his craft.

Some comments here question taste and soul. I guess it depends what you are looking for in the music. Standing up and demonstrating your technique is a statement about who you are and to a certain extent what you (as performer) expect from an audience. I don't dig it. I look for soul / feeling. But respect is due for his undoubted technical prowess and many people worship that

@the5cullens what?!?! ahahahaha sorry to dig up buried comments, but that's one of the dumbest things ive ever heard.
-
who cares about the technique. how does it sound?

@SkaterChild333 when you're getting payed to play, you can do whatever you want. It's past the point of fundamentals

@JAZZOLOGIST1 Hey Jazzologist1, Brits are nice people, so why are you behaving like a hysterical male chauvinist pig?..or..perhaps you are not sure about your sexuality?...so, take two penises and call me in the morning. BTW Carl and Chet are both great, they have a fabulous harmonic sense and although they are different, they are well respected by jazz fan with a musical ear..which is not your case......
@ARKfusion - You said it perfectly. I assume that those that talk nonsense about a genius like Carl Saunders, are just either deaf or ignorant...or even worst, envious.
Of course, very few people can appreciate the complex harmonic passages...how about the majority of people? While we write this silly stuff, Carl plays..better every day.

i know i'm no where near as good as this guy, but he has his fingers flat when he plays, and ur not suppost to. you're suppost to have them arched.

SkaterChild333, your observation is right. On the other hand, there are thousands of trumpet players play with arched fingers and can't play as Carl does..
So...perhaps it's time to try flat fingers :-)
