In Italian of course. Tebaldi's Elisabeth matches any Wagnerian soprano in volume but has the Italian squillo to give light & warmth to the glorious melody.

  • Why does Tebaldi only sing in Italian? Surely she had the ability to sing this in German? I feel cheated.

  • @robertodiavolo You shouldn't. Wagner approved performances of his operas in other languages. Tebaldi has said she didn't feel she could be as expressive in other languages so she stuck to Italian. This, sadly, prevented her from singing Strauss (among other things) which would have been perfect for her in my opinion.

  • Do you have the italian lyrics sung by Tebaldi?

  • no, sorry.

  • This is 1950.

She recorded this aria in stereo twenty years later, in 1969 and with the same voice, in glorious voice

  • An interesting choice for Tebaldi. And, a successful one. She sounds quite natural in this music. Great.

  • ... if wagner himself accepted his works being sung in italian or french, who am i to whine about it? tebaldi is in glorious shape here and it is such a privilege to hear a soprano who does his music justice... brava, bravissima indeed! and thank you so much Orfeus80 for yet another great video.

  • Elisabetta: Salve, d'amor - recinto eletto!... Or lieta alfin - io riedo a te... A sciorre i carmi - il mio diletto A te ritorna, - ei torna a me!...
  • @Orfeus80 You're right - she would have been wonderful singing Strauss. An artist of this caliber should not have limited herself or "stuck just to Italian" though. If she really thought she couldn't be as expressive in other languages, I think she was selling herself short, big time.

  • I did not know this Tebaldi's performance, great !

    Thank you Orfeus80.

  • Wagner would have loved Tebaldi's performance here. She was great in this role & Elsa.

  • much better than I expected.
