Fort Monroe,the largest stone fort ever built in the U.S. and today, still fully operational, it is the headquarters of the U.S. Army and Training Doctrine Command. During the Civil War, Fort Monroe was a Union-held power base in the center of a Confederate state. Today, the Casement Museum in the fort is a tangible part of the military history of the area.   • Wonderful memories from the 60's when my late husband served here...I also remember St Mary Star of the Sea, and all the history of this marvelous locale.

  • I live on Mill Creek, right across from Ft. Monroe. I can actually see it right now, across the water, out my window.
