Sheep farming is not so popular in Bangladesh as Australia or Newzealand. In those countries sheep are reared mainly for wool. But in Bangladesh it is reared only for meat.
In Bangladesh sheep population is 1.14 million. This figure indicates that emphasis is not being given for sheep rearing though it deserves. Sheep rearing or farming may be a profitable business for the rich and a means for eradication of poverty for the poor. Sheep breed usually in 5 months and 2-3 calves at a time. A calf becomes matured within 7-8 months. A family having only 5 sheep can sell 10 sheep on an average each year and can earn thereby atleast 25000 BDT. Those who think of poverty reduction program in Bangladesh can provide support the rural poor people in sheep rearing.
