No uploads for a while ay? Well hopefully this makes up for it, a Yolngu yidaki player totally new to YouTube!

Arthur Gaykamangu is an 18 year old Yolngu man from Ramingining and yidaki player for Dunganda Street Sounds. His Aboriginal name is Latitjngu, Laywanga and Walkiya, you take your pick what you want to call him, mostly families call him Latitjngu, however his nickname Lucky is also used a lot.

Latitjngu has a fast percussive personal style which utilises a lot of vocal calls, probably a result of playing in a band... you gotta be heard over and above the drums, guitars and keyboard (and sometimes brass instruments when guest musicians join them) and vocal calls are one way of achieving that!

He started playing yidaki as a 9 year old on a PVC pipe and is gaining knowledge of ceremonial styles of play. He knows his mother's Wanybarrnga clan songs and often participates in dance as well as sometimes helping out with yidaki playing in Wanybarrnga Djambarrpuyngu clan ceremonies.

Something to note... see how animated Arthur is when playing his wakal style, wakal meaning nothing serious, something just made up and not belonging to the ceremonial domain. In contrast, when he plays his mother's clan songs, he assumes a more serious demeanor and you can see the focus in his eyes.

    more uploads please ididj

  • @Cre8iveSignWorks ohk, yea i don't carry lights around with me, i use natural light and in this case its indoors so that's why its a bit darker than most of my other vids :-)

  • @ididjaustralia

hey sorry, i wasnt taking the piss.

i was just offering a comment and an observation.

i think its coz you were filming facing into the light that made the images in shadow, quite dark.....but hey what do i know? my vids arent the best quality thats for sure.

thanx 4 posting your videos...we love the didge vids a lot

    cheers

  • @Cre8iveSignWorks no probs buddy, i know you weren't taking the piss my friend, there's not much I can do at this stage really except to be more mindful of lighting and the direction of the light source as you say, unless of course all of a sudden there's a flood of donations to iDIDJ Philanthropy in which case I can hire equipment and staff etc. - and then the vids will be like the best best ever of all of YouTube!

  • @ididjaustralia

yeah that would be nice ay

well i hope that wish comes true for you mate

but i dont think either of us should hold our breath

    cheers

  • @Cre8iveSignWorks well im gonna get a HD camera next so you guys can enjoy even better videos :-) will have to wait 'til next year tho :(

    and toots too?? so fast.

I didn't mind the "lack of control"...it seemed more organic that way...
