@Lynn264Bergman Cradle to grave socialism? Have you ever read Paine? Paine was in favor of more "socialism" than most Americans today are. That "small entitlement" for the young would be $23k today, in rights of man he suggested a credit to poor families equal to $6k/child/annum The old age pension would be $9k/annum after age fifty & $15k/annum after age 60& the latter would also apply to the disabled. So where is the "cradle to grave socialism" that would have Paine spin in his grave?

In the first place this guy is a mumbler. Paine's power was always in words and not in his costume. I'll let that pass. However I can't gloss over the fact that he is so lost when it comes to actually conveying the meaning of the text that the video is absurd. Evidently he has not done his homework. The tragedy seems to be that tea partiers seem only capable of understanding what Paine wrote when Mark Levin tells them what he meant. Multiplied ignorance..

@badmuffy Glenn Beck has of late exhalted Thomas Paine and Bob Basso who is impersonating Thomas Paine and spouting right wing talking points.
So conservatives have to act like Paine was one them when he clearly was not. But the facts are of no importance to the Tea Partiers and the fact that they fall for the whole Bob Basso routine just proves what rubes they are.

You missed Paines sympathy for the poor:
"When it shall be said in any country of the world, my poor are happy, neither ignorance or distress is to be found among them; my jails are empty of prisoners, my streets of beggars, the aged are not in want, the taxes are not oppressive . . . When these things can be said, then may that country boast its constitution and its government." Age of Reason

Paine was not a Reagan conservative no matter how much reconstruction you wish to perform. Paine would roll over in his grave if he saw our disparity of wealth. The bottom 40% make as much a the top 1%. Paine would compare that to slavery and have the same distain for it. Paine proposed many taxes and he advocated taxing the rich to address social ills. Read Rights of Man.

I don't get it.. One minute he's saying we should have this entitlement for young people and the next minute he's saying don't vote for anyone who will expand entitlements.. I'm not sure I understand the point of this video.
This guy is just wrong. Paine was all for using taxation of the wealthy by the government to address social ills. Read Agrarian Justice (It's short) for your self and see the truth.

Paine proposed a "death tax" of 10% from which to help out those 10 years older than the average life span. Today the death tax is 45% and only one of many federally assessed taxes. The whole point is that he would roll over in his grave if he saw what the federal government does today in the area of cradle to grave socialism. Individual responsibility is near death with our country's economy soon to follow!

Paine promoted a very small entitlement for the young to start out with and for the extremely old to subsist with. Today the old men in the Senate and House provide gargantuan entitlements to the elderly and rob from the young to pay for them. It's simple, old folks vote, when young people begin to consistently vote, the entitlements for the elderly may be reduced to a reasonable level! Unitl then, the politicians keep increasing entitlements for the old.

So Paine proposed paying each American at age 18 for the loss of the ability to "roam free, hunt and gather". And was to pay for it with a 10% death tax...
Interersting for young people to consider.
