American Revolutionary War: Caribbean:

A British fleet under Admiral Sir George Rodney severely defeated the French fleet under the Comte de Grasse at the Battle of the Saintes in April 1782 forcing the French and Spanish to abandon a planned invasion of Jamaica.

The battle had the largest casualties of the entire American Revolutionary war the vast majority on French side. The ships were packed with French soldiers intended for an invasion of Jamaica.
It is estimated that 2,000 were killed, 7,000 wounded (at least 1,200 of these were on the De Grasse's ship ''Ville De Paris'' ). When De Grasse surrendered he was one only a few that had survived unscathed on the ship

Moreover 5,000 French were taken prisoner back to Jamaica. So many French surrendered (many of them very sea sick soldiers) that it hindered Rodney's attempts at pursuit and something that Samual Hood criticised him for.

The battle swung balance of power in the Caribbean to the British; France and Spain were forced on to the defensive. As a result British were able to recapture her Central American possessions and the Bahamas in 1782 & 1783.

This video is part of the BBC Documentary series 'Empire of the Seas' presented by the brilliant Dan Snow from the third episode.

  • look up the battle of jersey, the French were humiliated there as well. also; the Great Siege Gibraltar; 5,000 British defeat over 60,000 French and Spanish soldiers and marines! 2nd Battle of St Lucia, 5,000 British troops crush 10,000 French! 2nd siege of Savannah, 5,000 French and Americans defeated and chased away, by British infantry LOL

  • @LordGeorgeRodney

the last english dynasty was the godwinson dynasty and we destroyed them even your beloved royal family is of french/saxon descent not english or british.

  • HYW was a French civil war between 2 French dynasties fighting for the throne. No different from the religious or revolutionary wars. Gallic peoples have always conquered the British. Normans from 1066 -1154, angevins 1154 - 1485, Parisians 1215 - 1217 and again in 1326 under a French princess... LOL!

  • France an engaylisk kingdom? Ha! England wasn't even English. It was a French colony from 1066 - 1485. Even your Stuart dynasty was French from Brittany!

  • France was never occupied/bitch of engayland.

    France 1 engayland 0

    Vive la France!

  • @Talbot6832 Aside from an aversion to large standing armies, the British Government always knew European conquest was out of the question. This thinking contributed to the building of such a large and well trained navy that dominated the Oceans and made sure Britain remained safe through multiple World Wars.

  • @pennbzh British foreign policy was always about maintaining the balance of power in Europe so no ONE power could dominate. It has largely helped keep this Status Quo from Blenheim 1705 to the Rhine Crossing in 1945. Trying to conquer Europe is a fools errand and those nations that have tried it have had their countries ruined and capital cities occupied by foreign troops.

  • @pennbzh But England has won the World Cup, France has not. Additionally, the England vs France tally is 51 to 37. Additionally, England have the worst rugby governing body in the world and French players are paid considerably more. British sport has suffered considerably from mal management but that is slowly starting to change (see last Olympics).
