"Reflections on Neda and the Green Movement"
(Conceived and Edited by Jared Feldschreiber) June 8, 2010
My film perhaps is a reinforcement of what you we already know about Neda Agha-Soltan. On June 20, 2009, she was gunned down during a rally with the Green Movement in Tehran.
I didn't want to do a biopic or anything that went beyond what the media has already showed her because she is in many ways already sadly such a media creation. So, my intent for the film was to delicately and patiently pace the film in such a way that was emblematic of a the long struggle still awaiting the people of Iran.
The cast of characters are Neda, Ahmadinijahd, a regimented Khameni, and a glimpse into the lives of the other brave protesters in Iran. The film takes clips from news clips old and new, as well as still photographs (sometimes purposely repeated) that have already etched into our hearts. I also borrowed from documentaries.
I came across Professor of English's Dr. Rafey Habib's Poem for Neda on the web and felt like it was an indispensable complement to my piece, not solely because it dealt specifically about my subject, but it conjured up a litany of images that were all emblematic of the movement. It is a tragic and stark description of a nation in chaos, with Neda, the voice, perhaps serving as the lifeblood of the movement. In the beginning, I intentionally showed her death in a languid manner to show that "reason, faith, and the price [she] paid)" was slow, unfair, and she had been taken from us.
