Vasily Petrenko, born 7th July 1976 in St Petersburg, is a Russian conductor. He attended the Capella Boys Music School and the St Petersburg Conservatoire and studied conducting with Ilya Musin, Mariss Jansons, Yuri Temirkanov and Esa-Pekka Salonen.

In July 2005, Vasily was appointed principal conductor of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra (RLPO), the youngest-ever conductor in the post. He received critical praise for revitalising the orchestra in Russian repertoire (especially Shostakovich) as well as standard repertoire such as Brahms, and in English music. His first conducting appearance at The Proms was with the RLPO in August 2008. Vasily and the RLPO have recorded several compact discs for Naxos, and his recording of Tchaikovsky's Manfred Symphony won the Gramophone orchestral recording of the year in 2009.

In December 2008, the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain (NYO) announced the appointment of Vasily as its new principal conductor and he conducted his first concert as principal conductor of NYO at the 2009 BBC Proms.

In February 2011, the Oslo Philharmonic announced the appointment of Vasily as its next chief conductor as of the 2013-2014 season, with an initial contract of 4 years.

  • No it isn't , it's 'Dance of the knights' from Prokofiev's Romeo and Juliet

  • Maybe going a bit far calling him the most "brilliant conductor in the world" but he certainly is, in my opinion, one of the most gifted of the younger generation and if he continues at his current rate of excellence he has a great future ahead and will certainly end up as music director of one of the "elite" group of top world orchestras.

No disrespect to the RLPO with whom I sincerely hope he remains for many years to come.

  • What is the piece playing in the background at the beginning of this video?

  • He's a marvellous conductor - I love all the recordings I have with him at the helm!
