They can do if they want. It doesn't really put you off much.

That would be so hard to ring. Not only backwards, but so far apart. Do people actually come in and sit in the pews while they're ringing?

Are the ropes guided?

Look at 1:15 there are two brown things on the corner of each tower going up which guide the rope. However, if the rope goes up wonky it comes down even wonkier.
