This bird has been seen around for about a year. By color and proportion it appears to be a hybrid between the Least Bittern and the Green Heron. The fine beak gives indication of the dominance of the Bittern influence. The bird is seen nipping minnows from the swampy surface of her marsh pond. The female Mallard, perched conveniently nearby provides a familiar size to give a sense of scale. The Least Bittern is the most humbly proportioned of the fishing waders (Herons, Egrets, Bitterns), and shows to be less than half the size of the Mallard.
