In this edition:

Grey Gardens
(dir. The Maysles Brothers 1975)

Starring Edith Bouvier Beale & her daughter Edie

This feature length documentary is a gem of a movie and not to be missed. It features the aunt and cousin of Jackie Onassis in their East Hampton home, months after they had been raided by the local busy bodies.

The two brothers and film-makers The Maysles Brothers document the everyday lives of these two charismatic women, however if you look closely with your life experience as a reference, you will find this documentary slightly disturbing.

Here is an aristocratic mother who has held on to her daughter in out of fear of being alone.

You will enjoy this film; it's a classic that should be in every DVD collection. This one of my favourite quotes from the film:

Edie: I missed out on everything. I missed out on the reunion of my graduating class in Farmington because that was the fall that Jack Kennedy campaigned to get in and I was stuck here with mother, the cats, the house and Tealogue and I couldn't go.

Edith: No, you said you didn't want them to know how old you were, you said.

Edie: No I wanted...

Edith: Why I don't want them to know my age says Edie.

Edie: No I would have enjoyed that mother because Jack Kennedy campaigned to get in and won.

Edith: Get in the Farmington school, that'd be a good place for him....... (To the Maysles Brothers) What time is it chickens?

  • "They didn't clean and work because they were never taught to clean and work."

I agree 100%! People say they were a little 'mentally ill', but I always believed they were just 2 women who were left to fend for themselves and after years of being pampered they did the best they could! And God forbid, they had a good time! Love it!

  • The most amazing thing to me is that little Edie outlived most of the people who put her down.

  • There are far too many words to describe my thoughts regarding these two women. So, I'll just use a few that come to mind. In their youth they were beautiful and considered very fortunate to have lived in such riches, Sad to see that their lives didn't stay this way, but in the end they showed a very sustaining character that few people would live to tell. They are survivors in every sense of the word. Two wonderfully, fascinating, women. May they rest in peace.

  • @jsbach15 I take it you're a licensed physician who treated the Beales? Diagnosing women who survived without jobs after being left by the men who took care of them with a serious mental illness is the only ignorant thing I've read.

  • @wallyBbare Your comments are not only ignorant, they show you lack of concern for mankind. Sadly, both women suffered from Schizophrenia. But there are many forms of "mental illness" one from you're terminally afflicted!

  • LOL they were never taught to clean??Were they taught to whipe there ass's??
