You do know this song has nothing to do with a girl/ romantic love? It's pretty much about the abuse Eliott Smith suffered at the hands of his stepfather, and how it continued to haunt him. Examples:

The lyrics are pretty clear when looked at in that cotext. Also note the "Thanks to Charlie" in the liner notes. (Charlie was his physically and sexually abusive stepfather.)
