On 22nd November 2009, an RNLI boat (RIB) capsized during a training exercise on high seas in Wexford Harbour. Two crew managed to stay with the upturned boat and fire a flare, whilst the third was swept away in the tide. The two crew were winched by Irish Coast Guard Helicopter "Rescue 117" - while the Rosslare RNLI Lifeboat recovered the third man - who was then also winched to the helicopter... This video shows LIVE footage shot from the Helicopter 117.

  • Great video - do you have this footage but with the actual audio?

  • Yes, i do.

I know some of the crew (of both heli & RIB), and was just tricking around with some DVD editing software.

I have since discovered how to MIX both soundtracks, so I might make another version with both audios fading in & out etc.... ;-)

  • @TheGwinevere Why don't you get your facts right before you accuse the crew of giving up. I know them all involved in this and I am a helm of a lifeboat myself. They did everything possible in very difficult conditions and if you knew anything about the IB1 D class lifeboat you would know it takes 3 people to right it in difficult conditions and you would only have the energy to right it maybe twice. When a D class turns over it also goes beam on to the sea which makes it even harder.

  • @Mrcoffindodger They had attempted to right the boat already, but it is almost impossible with 2 people in bad conditions

  • @TheGwinevere You're my hero. I wish we could all be as heroic as you. These guys probably could have done things better, I don't know because I've only seen this video. They could have capsized after already having a man overboard for instance, already being separated.

What I do know is that they're out practising to save lives and you're watching youtube and talking about 'shame' - these people will give their lives for others. Have some respect.

  • This could so easily have been so much worse. Thank you for taking the time to put this video together and make it available for all to see.

  • Wexford Lifeboat the 'RNLI Philip Robert Booth' is a IB1 (D class)

Its an Inflatable boat , not a RIB (Rigid Inflatable Boat)

at 5 Metres and 436KG Its the smallest type of boat in service as an actual lifeboat ,

Rosslare Lifeboat is the 'RNLI Donald & Barbara Broadhead' A Severn Class ,

at 17Metres and 41 Tonnes its the Largest type of Lifeboat in Service.

  • @Mrcoffindodger valid point but self righting a d class ILB requires 3 crew to get the weight onto the shoulder of the boat, if one crew was detatched from the boat on the capsize the remaining 2 would have been unlikely to right it on there own, also I dont know how long they had been out prior to the capsize as it is hard work to self right so if you are already tired anyway 2 attempts will finish you off...

  • Why do people put videos on youtube like this with music it just does not do it justice.......live audio feed please......good job RNLI + COAST GUARD.

  • hi any chance we could have the sound oss 117 if it plaese

  • Great video.

  • very very lucky guys, wouldnt like to have gone through that.

one thing what was the reason for not righting the boat, thought they were trained to do that. Not being disrespectful just wondering what the reason was.
