Written by award-winning investigative journalist Dan Hurley, Diabetes Rising is a gripping expose of the quest for a cure for the disease that afflicts hundreds of millions of people around the world. Hurley chronicles todays diabetes epidemic—how the disease has grown so dramatically, why the American Diabetes Association focuses its attention on just a small handful of available treatments, and why the research being done today doesnt look beyond accepted types of treatments. Just as Eric Schlossers Fast Food Nation uncovered the sordid details leading to an epidemic of obesity, Dan Hurley uncovers the hidden truths of what is being researched—and even more importantly, what is not.
Diabetes Rising explores both Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes, one of the leading causes of deaths in the United States. With ground-breaking research and compelling stories seen through an investigative, historical, and narrative lens, Diabetes Rising couples big-picture insight with intimate reporting. The book yields riveting insight into the struggle between the pervasive malady and the medical communitys ongoing search for answers. Informed but not dominated by the authors own experience as a Type 1 diabetic, Diabetes Rising grants exclusive access to new studies, innovative treatments, and determined patients. Hurleys sharp, entertaining, and provocative read will change how readers understand diabetes, and the cultures, conditions, and medical climates in which it thrives.
@1:00 "why is it that if these pills are so great people are not getting any better?"
ans: WHEN WE VIOLATE BIOLOGICAL PROCESSES THERE IS A PRICE TO PAY!
The food chain is contaminated with biological weapons like NPK or Agent Orange, the soil is depleted, high fructose corn syrup from GMO's is in everything, animals are fed grain when they are meant to eat grasses and Americans are ignorant when it comes to nutrition=health.

Woooooooooooooo! Type 1 diabetes is the coolest disease ever! I am a Type 1, my daughter is a Type 1, my dad is, and his mom was.

So true! As long as there is fear, uncertainty and doubt about diabetes there will always be a market of a captive audience. Big Pharma loves that! Unfortunately -- those of us with Type I don't have much of a choice in the matter. Thanks for your insight, Dan!

Dan, just finished reading Diabetes Rising and must herald it as a great piece of investigative work. The story it tells is indeed different from information disseminated by mainstream channels. The sheer volume of research alone (and the access you were able to gain to the titans of the field) was as impressive as it was exhaustive! Thanks so much for the work you do here, which you were uniquely poised to deliver to "informationally-underserved" audiences with interest in this disease.
