Im 20 and have become aware of my ego....im still in a form of suffering because i am not happy and i think waaaaay too much. It is extremely interesting because i am completely aware of my ego, yet it still exists and i feel as if though i have no power to control it. Every "egoic" action or behavior i do is recognized by me, and i am constantly talking shit to myself in my head because i dislike how i behave....how is this possible? Im aware, but out of control

The ego is really tricky. Presence mainly "observes". Constant talking to one's self in their head most likely is the ego. Suggest listening to this by Eckhart. Internet links cannot be used in the comment section on You Tube, so I put (dot) where the "." is.

How do we break the habit of excessive thinking?

Being aware of the ego is like polishing a mirror. You polish and polish, and the dust keeps reappearing. You persist with this until you reach the point where you can smash the mirror. It just happens - practice without expectation; it's not like you have any other options and it's a better way to live than giving into ego; even if you get run over by a bus tomorrow, it's a better way to live here and now.

You 'smash the mirror' when there's no longer 'one' who 'observes'. It just is.

yeah sometimes bad thoughts come up and stuff but often I think it's your conscience...ie because you're pained by bad things you did in the past or something...but God forgives all sins.

i think its the unconscious mind talking, you know your conditioning, the past. The environment, parents, teachers echoing in your mind.

Lovely guy Echkart Tolle, I've only just learnt of his existance today and now I can't get enough of his talks! He's got a nice tone about his voice makes it really comfortable to listen and take in the point of his teaching.. DesertSmeagle I'm in the same situation as you, I'm aware of my ego and my worst fears and selfishness from that and yet I continue acting out those patterns! I want to break this spell so I want to watch the video about breaking the habit of excessive thinking~ Peace all!

Ya, I actually have laughed at it. Its just a character, and becoming aware of it gives you this odd realization that you could potentially be any character you want. We are all like actors playing roles in the movie of life, most of us are just unaware of the fact that we can be any character we want.....its fuckin crazy!...and ridiculous, because everyobody puts so much importance on their "character". Its actually quite obnoxious and annoying.
