A song about the classic novel and movie, 2001: A Space Odyssey, written by Stanley Kubrick and Arthur C. Clarke. Words and music written by Alex Ashery in response to a book report presentation for my 9th grade english class.
This song is dedicated to my teacher, Mrs. Neary, and my English classmates at Upper Dublin High School, who requested that I put this up here.
It's hard to understand at times, so here are the lyrics.

Oh millions of years ago,
In a barren desert land
Lived a species on the brink of extinction
This species was called ape-man.

One day as the ape-men were sleeping
A great monolith arrived
It gave the ape-men the want to be better and
Taught tool-usage to survive.

Its a story of survival of the fittest
Its a sci-fi fantasy.
Its a story about our species future
2001: A Space Odyssey

Well millions of years later
There is something new in space
With their spaceships satellites and spacesuits
Comes the rise of the human race

Doctor Heywood Floyd goes to the moon
To research TMA-1
The monolith sends a signal to Saturn
When it first sees the sun

Its a story of survival of the fittest
Its a sci-fi fantasy.
Its a story about our species future
2001: A Space Odyssey

Miles away on Discovery One
Sits Dave Bowman and Frank Poole
With their spaceship run by HAL-9000
Humanitys ultimate tool.

HAL goes crazy, killing Frank and the scientists
Who were on the Discovery too.
David finally shuts down HAL
Who killed for stating the untrue.

Its a story of survival of the fittest
Its a sci-fi fantasy.
Its a story about our species future
2001: A Space Odyssey

Now Daves alone on his trip to Saturn
Without humans, computers or cars.
His final message as he approaches Saturn:
Oh my god, its full of stars!

This is because Dave entered a star gate
Showing him the strange and wild
Dave prevents global nuclear destruction
When hes reborn as a star child

Its a story of survival of the fittest
Its a sci-fi fantasy.
Its a story about our species future
2001: A Space Odyssey

  • brilliant vid man but a few things 1 i just dnt liek ur voice( sorry but hey) 2 the monolith could have been placed there before by a diffrent species to watch us grow and such it didnot instantly teach us how to dothings

  • Thanks a lot for the review!

I understand the comment on my voice, and I sort of agree with you. My voice has too much tension to sing modern music; thus why I sing classical music most of the time.

As for the second comment, while this may be plausible for the movie, this video is based off of the book version of 2001. In it, the ape-men discover tool-manipulation over the course of a few days, and then advance through the generations. However, you are right that the monoliths watched us.

  • is that you singing alex?

  • Indeed it is.
