"We will get the patients out of bed sometimes the same day of the operation." Doctor Thomas P. Sculco, Surgeon-in-Chief at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York, reports on the usual duration of a hospital stay for a patient who has just undergone hip replacement. Doctor Sculco says he believes patients should be up and moving as soon as possible.

  • Dr. Sculco, your THR surgeons should train better so that they can perform the Direct Anterior Approach for hip surgery which is less invasive and has a shorter recovery period vs. the procedure all of your doctors at HSS perform. Maybe if you buy the correct equipment and the special table you might be able to really help THR patients. After seeing 3 of your doctors that only offered the old approach, I finally found the right one at NY Hospital for Joint Diseases.

  • i was in the hospital for 4 days, up the second day of surgery.
