Its actually quite obvious in the game to tell who and who isn't human in the game, the most giveaway is how the Civil Protection units speak towards you and how the Combine soldiers speak to either you or the dispatch, but I guess people just assume the CP's are not human because they "wear gasmasks"

No actually it is quite identified in the game if you listen closely, with the soldiers finished surgery is clearly seen in the game unless you haven't finished the game and with the protection units being encouraged to rank up they are giving messages through the dispatch voice throughout the game, if you have listened, you can continue accusing me of using this info from the wikia but I guess that is just your opinion, doesn't bother me but I am just giving you my point of view from it. :)
