Once the hub of all 'Oregon Country', Fort Vancouver was the HQ of the Hudson Bay Company's Columbia Dept, which included present-day British Columbia, Washington, Oregon, and Idaho.
The Fort protected a central, large-scale trading post that supplied the diverse groups that filtered into the Oregon Department during the 1800's. These include the fur trappers, the Native Americans and the Settlers from Europe and Scandinavia.
Great video! If you are interested in the fur trade, you will probably like FUR, FORTUNE, AND EMPIRE: THE EPIC HISTORY OF THE FUR TRADE IN AMERICA (W. W. NORTON, JULY 2010). To see a book trailer for this book, search fur trade history on youtube, or search the title. The book is available in bookstores, online and in stores.
