Part 5 of 9 segments.

Bloom continues here his discussion of the central text of the entire tradition, and reveals its inner core, the idea of philosophy as a way of life, in profound tension with every other life, because the man who lives it can see and accept things as they are. This simple formula, rightly understood, trumps all sham philosophic doggerel, and lets one see the imposters, or (as Nietzsche called them) the "actors" for the crowd. No disscussion of the Apology of Socrates has ever been as frank or illuminating.

For anyone interested in the enigmatic and erotic facets of Socrates, this beautifully translated book is of some use:

  • Mr. AllanBloom,

Do you know what translation of Plato's Apology Allan Bloom used?

  • An excellent translation has recently been done by a Professor Mark Kremer published by Focus Press. It includes an outstandingly literal and literary translation of Xenophon's own, and very different "Apology of Socrates to the Jury".
