Censored by CNN/Youtube! I added this video as a reply to the CNN/Youtube-supplied raw footage, but they deleted this video from the list of replies:

CNN gave Mike Huckabee so much time to demagogue college discounts for illegal aliens that they didn't give Mitt Romney enough time to make the essential point that what Huckabee supported would have deprived U.S. citizens of college discounts.

The existing federal law is Title 8, Chapter 14, Sec. 1623:

http://24Ahead.com/blog/archives/006373.html

The only version I could find of the bill that Huckabee supported is listed here (HB1525):

http://www.arkleg.state.ar.us/2005/scripts/ablr/bills/db1.asp?OC=H&lname=...

Here's the PDF:

http://www.arkleg.state.ar.us/ftproot/bills/2005/public/HB1525.pdf

Here are the different versions of the bill:

ftp://www.arkleg.state.ar.us/bills/2005/public/HB1525/

None of those appear to contain many of the provisions Huck listed; some of those provisions are part of a program (Academic Challenge Scholarship Program) illegal aliens would have been then eligible for, but they would have also been eligible for other programs.

  • Are the scholarships we're talking about need- or merit-based? Because quite frankly, if illegal immigrant children are better students than citizens, then they deserve merit-based scholarships - why deprive the child of opportunity because of the sins of his father?

  • grahambailey: when talking about millions of people, there will be thousands with SAT scores of 1600, thousands with 1599, and so on. Because of that, we can always find U.S. citizens who are as qualified as any illegal alien.

The question isn't why we would deprive illegal aliens, it's why we should deprive U.S. citizens, when illegal aliens are, by definition, citizens of another country and can seek education there.

  • Huckabee isn't even talking about tuition cuts for illegals, he's talking about the Arkansas Academic Challenge scholarship which is open to ALL qualifying kids. He's saying that if kids of illegals who have been in Arkansas schools since kindergarten can meet the qualifications, they should be able to apply for the scholarship. It's not about a tuition cut people! It IS available to all Arkansas kids, my own kids will be applying.

  • shojo29: the bill Huck supported (details here: tinyurl dot com/25vwb4), as voted on, simply said:

"Any tuition rate that is granted to residents of Arkansas shall be granted on the same terms to all persons, regardless of immigration status, who have attended a secondary educational institution in Arkansas for at least three (3) years and who have either graduated from an Arkansas high school or received a general education diploma in the state."

  • But that is not what he is talking about here. If you read through the provisions of the AACS, the qualifications he mentions here are almost word for word the same. Even if he were talking about what you said, it didn't pass.

  • shojo29: if he was only refering the the AACS, then he should have specified that. As it is, he gave viewers the false impression that, had the bill passed, it would only give access to tough programs like AACS instead of giving them all the benefits that citizens are entitled to.

  • Look at my post and compare it to yours, and you say I'm a moron??? Tsk, Tsk, Tsk!!! I feel sorry for you!!!

  • You're a fucking moron.

  • It is really sad to see the way some people speak of these fine candidates who are giving up their personal lives for over a year to run for office. They are all fine people and don't deserve harsh words. Mike Huckabee is the finest politician I have ever seen and an inspiration to us all. He WILL win the presidency in 2012 or 2016 (depending on what happens in Nov)

  • I dont know, why dont you ask the parents of the legal child who are paying the taxes of education? Is that fair for them?

  • The Huckster goes through ELABORATE LIES to try and cover his ILLEGAL ALIEN loving ass!! "They MUST BE students in AR SCHOOLS from AGE 4 through High School, MUST be DRUG FREE (they're DEALING DRUGS LOL!), and lastly, they MUST be A+ STUDENTS...yeah right LOL!! READ the LAW The Huckster proposed it DOES NOT have ANY of the "requirements" he said it does...LIAR!!

  • As a RESIDENT of AR since 1995 I PERSONALLY witnessed and SUFFERED from the ARROGANT, "How dare you question what I do for IILEGALS at YOUR EXSPENSE!" attitude AND PROGRAMS for ILLEGALS sponsored by the "Huckster" as we lovingly call him here in AR. READ the LAW YOU copied here and "The Huckster" fought tooth and nail for. It CLEARLY shows The Huckster LIED on the "requirements"!

  • just a thought, A scholarship is a grant for education. Education is ONLY worth getting if you plan on pursuing a CAREER. Can you find me ONE YOUNG PROFESSIONAL THAT IS ALSO ILLEGAL?
