This historic broadcast from February 12, 1940, marked the Man of Steel's first appearance in a non-print medium (although a speaking role for the character would have to wait until the second episode). Along with the complete sound from the radio broadcast (minus some slight audio dropouts), this video provides brief glimpses of the actors who played Jor-El and Lara in the serial chapter "Superman Comes to Earth" (1948) and in the TV episode "Superman on Earth" (1952).

This radio program, like most radio shows of the era, is in the public domain. The brief images from the serial chapter and TV episode are provided for purposes of historical reference only and not for purposes of commercial sale. No infringement is intended but only fair use. Please buy the DVD's of the Superman serial and the Adventures of Superman TV series available from Warner Brothers.

  • Could Superman fly when this aired?

  • @poolboyinla Not sure how they were treating it in the comic books at that time, but in the radio episodes that immediately followed it does seem implied that he was flying.

  • where can i find these? please upload more!

  • @ScarTissue111907 You can get hundreds of them on a CD-R for practically nothing on eBay because they're public domain. Same goes for most other old radio shows.

  • That was so awesome to hear!

  • @westeightyone Yes.

  • my brother and i had this episode on an old 8-Track, we listened to it so much that we nearly broke the darn thing!

it says in the introduction of the episode here that he's able to leap into the air 1/8th of a mile.

Where he would land would have a lot to do with the angle that he launched at.

The Max Fleisher cartoons in the 40s claimed that he could leap tall buildings in a single bound.

Kryptonite was first introduced on the radio show.
