I think the sound is similar but not enough to be a copy. It's ridiculous. It's not even the same riff, the lyrics are totally different. I don't think it's unlikely at all that the Hives came up with their riff for Tick Tick Boom without hearing this song, given that it fits very well with the rest of their back catalogue and it's just they style. I'm sorry Shapiro felt ripped off, that feeling can't be fun, and his song isn't bad, but I just think it's an (unfortunate) coincidence.

I like the hives but I feel really sorry for these guys. They made jack off this song and the hives have made millions probably on a song with essentially an identical verse. You can say the chorus is different all you want but let's face it people don't buy the song to hear some swish twathead say "tick tick boom" and some gash explosion. The verse is the best part.
