Why does it have to be either or? I like Battle's control and you can't argue with her final Ride on Ride on which is spot on. At the same time Jessye Norman gives this piece that extra oomph. I mean why argue about it? "Non è bello ciò che è bello, è bello ciò che piace."

Not a patch on Jesse Norman's version. Battle might as well be singing about her shopping list.

I don't like her scooping.

Outstanding.

I like this approach. It's fairly straight-forward with no fluff. I drew inspiration from this version for my interpretation. Nice!

@FoggyRoad81 What do you mean when you say "coloratura technique can inform spirituals" I'm very interested to know!

I can't say wether I prefer Battle's or Norman's, all I can say is different approaches were taken. I would have to see the score to better be informed of what the author intended!

@janesbabyboy Jessye does it really well, but its still not as fast and doesn't evoke that feeling of riding on a galloping steed the way Battle's does. But Jessye's is the best most controlled final phrase of the big dramatics.
@FoggyRoad81 Well check out - Ride on, King Jesus - Jessye Norman
