STUNNING, but what kills me is that the gentleman apparently did not recognize what he was doing, and instead of calling a university or museum, destroyed the archaeological context of the artifacts. Every time I think about it, it strikes me -- what a breathtaking find and, at the same time, such an irrevocable loss of precious information. Ah well. So it goes.

The "gentleman" is very experienced and reported his finds through the correct channels as all responsible detector users do.I f you must point fingers perhaps blame the farmer for mangling some of the hoard with his plough?Or perhaps it was better left in the soil and undiscovered?
The first port of call is the local finds officer,look up P.A.S.

wow 1500 pieces. I bet there are hourdes of people heading for staffordshire with metal detectors now
