BC Passive House (BCPH) has collaborated with Dürfeld Constructors (DC), the Canadian general contractor and partner for the 2010 Olympic Austria Haus, to develop a prefabricated panelized system for low energy and Passive House construction. The Rainbow Passive House Duplex (RPHD) will showcase this panelized system and will be used to demonstrate the benefits of prefabrication and affordable Passive House construction. To demonstrate this affordability, the RPHD is being built as part of the Resort Municipality of Whistler's Price Restricted Housing Initiative. However the real savings for the RPHD will occur through the dramatic reduction in heating and cooling costs. For example, the cost to heat cool and provide domestic hot water for the Lost Lake Passive House (previously the Austria Haus), a 2,700 square foot building, was $280 for the entire year. A conventional building of similar size and usage would, on average, cost $3000/year for the same function.

Each side of the RPHD consists of 2,450 square feet with an unfinished basement, three bedrooms, two bathrooms and is designed to consume up to 90% less energy for heating and cooling than a conventionally built home. The RPHD will be certified through the Passive House Institute in Darmstadt, Germany.

On top of Passive House Certification, the design team for the RPHD was also able to include CLT panels for the deck and middle floor construction, sustainable building products, a high-efficiency heat recovery ventilation unit with a subsoil heat exchanger, solar hot-water, drain water heat recovery, triple-glazed, superinsulated windows and the option for rainwater harvesting.
