Alex Salmond's views and objectives really don't have any substance at all. I truly believe he has one (quite shallow) aim alone, which is to simply achieve what so many better/greater men before him have tried and failed to do!
Does he really care about the wider issue of whether this is in Scotland's (or in fact Britain's) best interest or is he merely on some selfish crusade in an attempt to go down in history as the man who finally broke up the union?

@glasgow1234 As an English Tory..i couldn't agree more...i don't want Scotland to leave us.....but it would give the the Tories a bigger representation in the English Parliament ! maybe he is just an old softie at heart

Too many deep fried Marsbars.

@glasgow1234 I see no evidence that he doesn't care about Scotland - i think you are just being emotional. The oil is obviously a plus point but it's still a tiny contributor to the UK treasury and even if there was no oil you're mad to think he'd want to get rid of Scotland. Does he want to get rid of Wales? No PM comes in with the idea of making his country considerably smaller.
I don't think Scotland would fail at all. I don't see it being better off though.

@N330AA You see, i and many Scots believe we would be better off as an independent country. People in England complain that they seems to be funding Scotland which to me should mean they are supportive of us raising and spending our own money but the reply is usually " but you would fail, you are too poor ".I still don't see a valid reason as to why DC wants Scotland in the union? You think just because it will be messy? He couldn't care less about Scotland! It's our oil he is after!

@glasgow1234 Within the context of the UK you are subsidised because you get above average public spending per head for no apparent reason. From an individual country's point of view you are not. We'd both lose out with independence though. The divorce would be very costly and messy for starters and no PM wants to be dealing with that shit.

@N330AA I'm not stupid.... i am asking WHY do they want to preserve the union? What benefit is Scotland to the Conservatives or the rest of the UK? All i seem to hear from down south is how they all seem to fund me with their taxes.
-
@glasgow1234 Because a key policy of the Conservative and Unionist Party is preserving the union, the clue's in the name really.

Commissar Salmond can go his way and form his Communist Republic of Scotland. the sooner the better.

Can't wait for Scottish independence. I've had ambitions for it all of my life. Word of warning to the SNP... stop trying for a Scottish vote on Scottish independence, it won't work, as the Jocks aren't stupid enough not to know which side their bread's buttered on and that butter's County Life (English Butter) SNP, campaign for an English vote on Scottish indepencence, as we'll dump you faster than a rabid dog.
@glenpovey Then please tell me why an English Conservative Prime Minister is so against independence for Scotland if all we do is take money from England? Surely with only one tory MP in Scotland, it is in David Cameron's best interest to be supportive of Scots independence? Can you answer that for me please?
