I remember being at Wal-Mart one year on Rememberance Day, and they went on the PA system and asked everyone for two minutes of silence. The lights dimmed, the sound system went off, and everyone stopped in their places. It was incredible.

This is awesome!
My Mom was telling me that when she was growing up in Toronto, everything stopped for one minute at 11:00 on Remembrance Day. The music on the radio, the streetcars, buses, etc. What a vivid reminder that would be to take the time to remember!

speaking of remembrance day, i have a small tradition where I watch It's a pittance of time by terry kelly. (/watch?v=2kX_3y3u5Uo) Best song that can ever be played on remembrance day.

It isn't about who took lives, it's about who risked theirs to preserve what we have today - freedom. Don't ever forget that. "Men sleep peacefully in their beds at night because rough men stand ready to do violence on their behalf." - George Orwell

Our sacrifices in wartime, especially WW2, have been in vain. We fought agaist Fascism, against injustice and tyranny, against discrimination. Yet unbeknownst to most people, we practice this behaviour at home against our own citizens. Many of them wounded soldiers, police, health workers, just about everybody. About time we looked in the mirror instead of other countries.

Well, maybe its best I don't know what they are then. I come from a long line of people on both sides of my family that have served our country both in war, and in peace time. I have friends that have served and are still serving, and fighting overseas. I have nothing but respect for them. Anyone that volunteers their time and lives my country and my freedom, say THANK YOU, MERCI.

They weren't thoughts that I could ever conjure up in my brain when speaking of our veterans (past and present). I do apologise for yelling in my previous comment however; it's not characteristic of me to go off like that!
FrenchFrog, we are both Canadian, we share the same anthem, flag, and I'd like to think the same cultural understanding. However, I do not believe that's the case since you can so easily diminish our sacrifices during wartime!
