It's completely fair. Judy had the same track, set, costumes, song, etc. - it was up to her to make it come alive. If she needed to focus less on copying Judy and more on her own performance, she should have done that.

Brilliantly put together. YouTube posting at its best.

@lostvocals3 That's right, no one does it better than Judy Garland! :)

judy garland always takes over!

Well, she damn near did a good job at mimicking Garland's movements.

I agree the Judy Davis doesn't do it nearly as well as Judy Garland, but let's face no one will! Judy Garland's amazing and no one will be able to replicate that, she was too special!

I think Judy Davis looks terrible here. Like, really unattractive. Which is a shame because she's a very pretty lady and Judy Garland looks beautiful in this scene. Something just doesn't work with the hair and makeup on Davis in this scene. Apart from this scene I think Me and My Shadows is wonderful - as is Davis and Tammy!
I think this is good, but the trolley song wasn't filmed on set. They used an actual trolley and it went around the streets on the back lot of MGM. That's all I know, so I don't know how they managed the playback. Also Judy Davis would have been better in she came into the movie after Judy Garland was fired from MGM and started doing concert tours. It's the perfect transition from Tammy Blanchard to Judy Davis. They both did a great job in the film.

It was filmed on set. The scenes boarding the trolley were shot on the backlot, but the scenes on the trolley were shot using rear screen projection as you see here.

I don't think she was cast in the role because she looks like Judy Garland. She was cast because she's a phenomenal actress and was awarded for playing the role. She apparently studied Judy, her actions nearly spot on.

.
I agree that how much she looks like Judy doesn't matter. I was just surprised that in spite of duplicating the set, costumes, and soundtrack, Davis conveys none of the charm or excitement that Garland does so easily. I don't know what it is, but Garland makes the song come alive, while Davis just performs it.
