Album Review : Smile by Boris

Released in 2008 on Southern Lord records.

Boris made a really good album with Smile. On here, Boris explore all these different sounds ranging from classic rock ballads to heavy stoner riffing to metal equivalent of shoe gaze.

For every big riff, there's a mellow, lo fi song to follow it. This album is a whirlpool of musical ideas.

Anyone who digs the Melvins, Earth or any form of experimental, boundry pushing metal should enjoy Smile.

One of Boris's more accessible albums, but by no means lame or generic. All the tracks have a unique feel and sound very emotional.

If I had to give this a category, I'd say it's psychedelic desert metal. But there are lots of doom and drone flavors here too. Stephen O'Malley even makes an appearance.

Very fuzzy, very load, but also very quiet and emotive at the same time.
