This is my 1988 Carrier "Round One" air conditioner and the last year of production for this style before Carrier switched to their "Tech-2000" design for 1989.

This was also the last year for Carrier's attempt at copying the spine fin coil design that GE (now American Standard/Trane) originally came up with in the 60's. While I heard that Carrier's version of spine fin coils worked nicely for straight cool units, they had some problems with water shedding which lead to poor defrosting performance on heat pump units. After a few years of production, Carrier dropped the spine fin and went back to the tube and fin condenser design which they still use today.

Although the tag says "High Efficiency", I don't think it's any higher than 9 SEER. It still works good for being 22 years old, requiring only a new contactor and some oil for the fan motor.

  • What kind of oil did you use on the motor?

  • @gatrwrks Just 3 in One

  • Did you live in this house since it was new?

  • @fanslightsandheaters Yep. We moved here in 1989

  • That thing is in GOOD condition! 22 years old and still working perfectly. Do you still have the original furnace? Is your heat gas, electric, or oil?

I also have a video of my friend's 35-year old York central air-conditioners running on YouTube, you might wanna watch that.

  • @classifiedinfo We still have the original Carrier natural gas furnace.

  • god how loud are the start ups ?

  • @Daconthocon78

Well, lesson was learned on 3 in 1. I went to ZoomSpout afterward.

  • @fedorauser1003 I use the 3 in one oil blue can and nothin is wrong.

  • @Daconthocon78

Automatic transmission fluid works wonders as well.

  • @Daconthocon78

Bad thing about 3 in 1 oil is that it gums up over time. I suggest LPS2 to loosen the bearings followed up my ZoomSpout. Good stuff.

  • What happened to the carrirer logo on the fan grill?

  • Do you still have this A.C and does it still work well?

  • I have a carier round one air conditoner at my house.

  • @yuandrew I use 3 in one oil for my fans.

  • My first house had a 88' Carrier RoundOne, that was back in 99'-02'. It must have finally quit because it's a different unit there now.
