Bullettube, which of the first Beatle hits are you talking about? It´s a bit unfair to tell that about the Beatles, since they were the first band whose hits were self-penned. Some of their covers became very popular indeed (Twist and shout, Rock and roll music... ) but in fact they never released them as singles. Instead of it, first Hollies hits were covers (Stay, et. al.), as usual back in those days. It wasn´t until later that the enormous talent of the Hollies as songwriters came up.

The Hollie were #1 chart toppers more often then the Beatles during the 60s. Why? Because they were far better musicians and song writers (they performed their own original music and lyrics). The Beatles first hits were covers but were better promoted by Brian Epstein, and only later did the Beatles become better musicians and John and Paul got serious about song writing.
