Recorded from the LP "Great Songs of the 60s - Volume I," a Columbia Special Products LP "created exclusively for Safeway," according to the front of the LP jacket. Serial number is CSP 129; I am unable to determine the genesis of this LP, but judging by the style of the label it appears to have been marketed in the late 60s or early 1970s.

  • I have a few real records I still listen to thanks for haveiing this!

  • @chkjns thx for your comment - i think it's always interesting to have some words from dedicated people, with a bonus interest when they have practiced...

well, i still don't find much on this track (not even at 1:05) - "prewired", i guess.

i'd like to rebutt the "over-amped drums & guitars" argument though : if you take a look at my channel, you'll find rock bands all right, but also many names including bach, debussy, rickie lee jones, norma winstone. drums and amps are not the point

  • @kolibet I was one of the enthusiastic commenters on this. This is a very dynamic song with lots of instrumental 'punches'. Some phrases are like a bungee. like at 1:05, where the music drops me & then picks me back up. I played sax for 8 years & did some music approaching this style. I know what's involved to perform this & appreciate it a lot for that. We're all prewired at birth for likes & dislikes. I need more than pounding over-amped drums & guitars to do it for me musically. chuck

  • just discovered mr lester lanin, mentioned in sorrentino's "steelwork" - this sounds like utter crap to me - i'm just baffled to read those enthusiastic comments - well, it takes a lot of different people to make a world... enjoy !

(but that was interesting : one character in the book, Al, likes a lot lanin's band - Al seemed rather cool to me, but now i see him as a very mean guy - i wonder how sorrentino feels about him...)

  • I still have dozens of green and pink beanies embroidered with "Lester Lanin" that Lester would personally hand out from the edge of the stage during society balls at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel while conducting his band played. He was a neat guy, always taking requests. Sorry he's now passed away, an end of an era.

  • Please post more Lester Lanin!

  • @1hardblizzard It is really is. Thank you.

  • @gva0917 @ chkjns i see you are together on this one, great tune...al

  • Fancy

  • @gva0917 Just listening over & over, thanks to you & cvb. This is better than a York Peppermint Pattie (& no calories). I get the sensation I'm in a theatre in the middle of Manhattan, listening to an opening overture. For 2:36 I am transpoted to another time and place!

Block party at my house in 4 weeks - I'm the DJ! :D

I've got 4 hours of music on a playlist I've been making this past year & THIS song is perfect to include. I'll blow their socks off with good music!!!
