Finally got around to making a video of my hissers :) I've had these g. portentosa hissers for several years. There are many species of hissing cockroach. I also have some g. oblongonata (check out my other vids!)

The females are pretty chill, as you can see... but the males (the ones with "horns") hiss at me and ram into my finger :) Contrary to what you may hear or read, the females DO hiss, as well. The last one I handle is my favorite, Igor. He rarely hisses anymore, he's so used to being handled by me. I love my roaches.

I won't hesitate to use the block/delete comment functions if you're rude, obnoxious or flat-out ignorant in your comment. Fair warning! Also, sorry for the cartoons and fish tank noise in the background.

  • @PenanggalanMonster Wait so I need a 20 gallon tank for 1 hisser? O.o

  • @Xxcory11xx Oh sorry, forgot about that part. Most people keep a lot more. No, for one you'd just need a 5 or 10 gallon

  • @PenanggalanMonster how big of a tank would I need for 1? Would a little plastic critter cage with a piece of wood be okay?

  • @Xxcory11xx A good starting kit would be about a 20-gallon tank or plastic container with holes poked in the top. Make sure whatever lid you use doesn't have crevasses small enough for young roaches to sneak through. Some substrate, such as coconut bedding, sticks and things to hide under, a spray bottle (to mist fresh water every couple days for humidity), and a shallow tray for water. They eat anything from old veggies, fruits and bread to dog or cat food for protein.

  • @PenanggalanMonster How often do you clean their tanks out?

  • @Xxcory11xx It's actually best if they're not cleaned too well or too often - maybe once every few months or so? As long as there's no mold growing, there won't be much smell

  • They sound like those little wind-up toys... Interesting video. This made me dislike roaches a little less.

  • it sounds like someone is taking an epic piss in the background

  • @Xxcory11xx Yes providing you attend to it's needs as far as heat and humidity go......

  • The one you picked up at the beggining is freakin awesome lol

  • @PenanggalanMonster alright thanks ^o^

  • @Xxcory11xx Not really, they kind of "nibble" but they don't have the kind of mouthparts to actually draw blood or hurt. it just tickles :)
